Australia's haunted sitings....
- The Alkimos is the wreck of a former U.S. Navy ship from World War II, that occurred off the coast of Western Australia in 1964.
Alkimos wreck
A brief history:
The Alkimos was an Greek international ship that got stuck on reefs just off the shore north of Perth, Western Australia in 1963. After other several attempts of trying to rescue the ship and finally getting it to Fremantle for repairs, repairs were not not done due to owed money and a tow was organised to tow it to Hong Kong for urgent repairs.
On the way and only 50+km north of Perth the tow line broke and once again it got stuck on reefs. A successful attempt at pulling the ship from the reef was short lived when the boat responsible was instructed to leave theAlkimos and return to Fremantle. The Alkimos was anchored but shortly there after broke away to find its final resting place just a few hundred metres from shore. The following year it was sold for parts and left to rust and decay from 1964.
There are many rumours about the ship. During the ships fast build some welders have believed to of been welded inside alive in the hull of the ship.
Mysterious fires broke out on the ship.
A ghost is said to walk the ship dressed in oil skins. This has been witnessed by caretakers and other ship owners after getting stranded on reefs.
Whilst the ship was stuck on the reef, it went through 8 owners, whom all during ownership had bad luck and illness at some point.
Stories from locals:
Horses going past along the beach a few hundred metres away have been known to want to completely avoid the area.
They have either stopped or had go a long way around through the dunes to get past.
People who have contacted us have also had their dogs acting strangely while in proximity to the wreck. One dog owner described to us “it was as if he (the dog) was seeing someone or something clear as day to which I could not see at all. He stopped. Stared at something wagging his tail then wanted to bolt! Every time we come past this part of the beach near the wreck he looks to see if what he saw that day is there.”
People surfing in the area not far from the wreck have mysteriously lost their surfboards never to surface again.
Reaching this spot requires a 4WD. Although we were able to come through the new Alkimos development city being built a few kilometres away as we knew people working there.
We parked near the beach and simply walked up with our Ghost Hunting equipment.
Today not much of the Alkimos is visible. In the last 30 years it has completely disintegrated from a full ship.
Going on board of what is left would be extremely dangerous given its current condition. No attempt should be made going out on the reef at all.
With strange events happening to others on the shore in the past, we decided to do our investigation here but also keep a camera on the Alkimos wreck for the chance of a ghostly apparition.
The Investigation
The investigation started late afternoon and finished around mid morning AM totaling around 9 hours.
We set up a camera to record the decayed Alkimos wreck and started our investigation on the shore and dunes.
During 3 long EMF sweeps some 20 metres into the dunes, one investigator picked up on some strong electro magnetic disturbances with the Tri Field meter which hung around a short time before dissipating. Out here there are just rugged, remote dunes. There is nothing for many miles that could give a false reading. Cold spots & noises were practically impossible to detect due to location.
Trying to collect EVPs was hard given the windy conditions on the coast even with a microphone sock. Any EVP collected evidence was ignored along with temperature readings given the conditions.
A camera fixed and zoomed into what is left of the wreck did not record any movement on or around the ship over the time of the investigation. There were no personal experiences here this night.
A well known site with an interesting history which won’t be forgotten due to the new Alkimos housing development a short distance away just being started on.
- Ararat Lunatic Asylum, or Aradale, is the largest abandoned lunatic asylum
in Australia. Opened in 1867, Aradale was reserved for many of the
incurable mental patients in Victoria during the 1800s. An estimated
13,000 people died here during 140 years of operation.
- Thirteen people were executed at the Ballarat Jail in Ballarat. The remains of seven criminals are still on the grounds.
- Beechworth Lunatic Asylum in Beechworth, Victoria
is reportedly haunted by several ghosts of departed patients. Open from
1867 to 1995
- Brisbane City Hall in Brisbane, Australia
has several stories of deaths spanning the eras before and after its
construction. During construction, workmen were said to have died while
laying the foundations, which were on top of a former swamp. It is also
said that the area was once a significant Aboriginal site – either a
meeting place or campground. One story relates the death of a
maintenance man, or lift attendant, who either fell to his death down
the lift well or was crushed by the lift – this story likely results
from a suicide from the clock tower that occurred in 1935.(Haunts Of Brisbane)
Another story claims an American soldier was stabbed to death during
World War II, after a fight over an Australian girl turned ugly. Staff
have reported the sounds of an argument from the Red Cross Tea Room, and
there are many reports of sounds and unusual activity in the areas
surrounding these deaths. A third story claims the apparition of a woman
is regularly seen traversing the main stairs in the lobby, and to look
out over the foyer – a story which likely results from another suicide
from City Hall's Clock Tower in 1937, although recent photos of the
stairwell exhibit a possible apparition.(Haunts Of Brisbane)
- Dreamworld is a theme park in Coomera, Queensland. One building inside the grounds of the theme park, where the reality television series Big Brother Australia
is produced, has been reported to be haunted since the show's start in
2001. Numerous production staff claim to have witnessed the presence of a
young girl, as well as a child's voice and fog appearing late at night
and early in the morning. In addition, since the Buzzsaw ride was built
in the 2011, there have been sightings of a ghost called Jack Darke, who
has been claimed to have been killed by a buzzsaw. It is also rumored
that the Buzzsaw is built on a burial ground.
- Lalor House in Richmond, Victoria is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of the family of Peter Lalor
- Monte Cristo Homestead in Junee, New South Wales was the site of seven deaths in the 1800s, and is reported to be the most haunted house in Australia. Various ghost groups havereported sightings there.
- North Head Quarantine Station in Manly, New South Wales housed victims of a number of diseases including smallpox and the Spanish flu
between 1833 and 1984. It was the site of over 500 deaths. A number of
ghost tours are run on the grounds, which includes a large cemetery.
- Port Arthur in Tasmania operate nightly ghost tours.
- The Princess Theatre in Melbourne
has reported several ghosts since the building opened in 1886. The
theatre's best known "inhabitant" is Frederick Baker, whose stage name
was Frederick Federici, a talented bass-baritone singer who died in March 1888 whilst singing the role of Mephistopheles in Faust –
and who was seen by the rest of the cast taking his bows with them
shortly thereafter. For years the theater kept a seat vacant in the dress circle
for Federici (only ceasing the practice on economic grounds), and his
appearance in the dress circle during rehearsals for a new show is
considered a good omen.
- Whepstead House in Wellington Point, Queensland
is rumoured to have a number of ghosts: Gilbert Burnett's wife Martha
who spreads the scent of lavender perfume; the daughter of Gilbert and
Martha, who apparently disappeared without a trace; Gilbert &
Martha's son who had a withered leg and haunts the stairwell; and the
ghost of an elderly servant who is seen around the house in a bowler's
hat and suit. While no historical basis has been found for any of these
stories, the house itself acted as a private hospital for a number of
decades, during which time over a dozen people passed away. It is
considered likely that the building's haunted atmosphere and unusual
events result from this period of use.
- Victoria Park Railway Tunnel in Brisbane, Australia
played host to one of Brisbane's most famous ghost sightings in 1965,
after a group of local children overheard rumors suggesting a ghost had
been observed within the tunnel. The following night, the children crept
down in the hope of spotting the apparition. One boy, lagging behind
the rest of the group as they passed through the tunnel, was apparently
accosted by a misty green, limbless, headless apparition that seemed to
materialise from the wall of the tunnel. Seemingly mesmerised by the
spectre, the boy was dragged by his friends to the nearby Royal Brisbane
Hospital, who feared he had been possessed by the ghost. The ensuing
tale, as related by the children to hospital staff, made sensational
newspaper headlines the next day, and within a short time thousands of
local residents were lining both sides of the tunnel in the hopes of
catching a glimpse of the ghost. The week following, the Victoria Park
ghost became the major talking point of Brisbane, and numerous
suggestions to its identity were put forward, although the spectre may
very well have resulted from one of the numerous suicides that took
place in Victoria Park in previous years.
